Dell’s #CultureCode: Why Company Culture Matters

Hello AMA Family!

We’re moments away from Thanksgiving break, and before we log off to feast on turkey, stuffing, and pie, I wanted to feature our final sponsor this semester, Dell Technologies. We will take a deep dive into Dell’s company culture and look at how it shapes their business and organization. 

What is Dell Technologies?

You’ve probably heard the famous tale here at UT. It was founded by Michael Dell in 1984 (in his dorm room!), while he was a student here at the University of Texas at Austin. Dell Technologies has grown from a small personal computer upgrade kit business to an American multinational computer technology company whose goal is to provide greater access to technology for people around the world (talk about growth!). Since its inception, Dell has even acquired a number of companies, like Alienware, EMC, and VMware, and is continuing to expand its portfolio and business solutions offerings. 

What exactly is company culture? And why is it important?

Company culture describes the values, goals, and attitudes that characterize an organization. It best describes how a company functions, from how people work to where the company is headed for the future. Now more than ever, companies are realizing the importance of having a mission and belief system that drives the business, and that people are drawn to companies whose purpose aligns with their own. For you, AMA reader, this is something that you should consider when looking for a summer internship or full-time job! So, what does this look like at a large company like Dell?

Dell’s mission statement is as follows: 

“At Dell Technologies, our purpose is to drive human progress, through greater access to better technology, for people with big ideas around the world.”

While on the outside, Dell may seem to just be a computer company, their ultimate goal is something greater, and is played out through the values that they uphold. The specific values that Dell prides itself on are important for long term success and sustainability. 

This brings us to Dell’s #CultureCode.

“Our culture is defined by our values and made real every day by how we work and lead. We know our culture is the foundation for all we’ve achieved, and for all the success ahead of us. This is our culture code. #CultureCode.”

There are two main parts to the #CultureCode:

  1. How We Work: These values drive day to day tasks and how people at Dell take on challenges. It includes how Dell employees should work together to grow as individuals and as an organization.

    • Innovation
    • Results
    • Integrity
  1. How We Lead: These values dictate how individuals within all parts of the organization should act and work (the highest standard!), in order to make a positive impact in the lives of the consumer and others in the business.
    • Relationships
    • Drive
    • Judgment
    • Vision
    • Optimism
    • Humility
    • Selflessness
Our Culture Code at Dell

Each one of these values is crucial to the success of the organization. As an individual, you want your values to exist in your personal life and professional life. And as an organization, Dell seeks to build a community of like-minded people with the same vision for the business. 

As future leaders in the workforce, we need to remember that it is often not what we do, but how we do it, that matters.
